Identification of Friend or Foe (IFF) is an electronic system, which determines the intent of an aircraft at the speed of a fast computer. It is a two-channel system with one frequency (interrogator- 1030MHz) used for interrogating signals and another (identity reply unit 1090MHz) for the reply. The pulse pair spacing is typically 3 usec (for 1030MHz) and 1.45usec (for 1090MHz) with pulse width of 0.8usec and typical PRF of 300-400Hz. This paper explains the design considerations of high power gated crystal oscillator operating in 1030MHz. It also covers the simulated and actual results of the oscillator.
