The current issue of the IETE Journal of Research, Vol. 56, No. 3 (May-June 2010) contains six articles. These articles present the ongoing research and developments taking place in the broad areas of signal processing, communications, biomedical engineering, power systems and control engineering.

The article titled "Biosignal Denoising via Wavelet Thresholds" gives a method for ECG signal and MRI image enhancement using the discrete wavelet transform and discrete stationary wavelet transform. Different types of signal thresholding are compared, and performance conclusions are drawn from the simulation study.

The second article is on "Decoupled Solid State Controller for Asynchronous Generator in Pico-Hydro Power Generation". It presents the design of a voltage and frequency controller for a pico-hydro based asynchronous generator. The model performance has been studied for constant power input uncontrolled pico-hydro turbine three-phase four wire loads that are balanced, unbalanced, linear and non-linear.

The next article on "A statistical Approach for Fault Diagnosis in Electrical Machines" presents a study of time domain signal of machine vibrations in which the bearings are either fault-free, or have a fault in the outer race, or have a fault in the inner race. The faults are classified using statistical measures, and frequency-domain analysis is used to verify the results and draw inferences. The authors show that it is possible to classify the above faults usefully.

In the article titled "Design of 3D Nonseparable Mth Band Eigenfilters with the 48-Hedral Symmetry," the authors present a design method for 3D Mth Band Eigenfilters with 48-Hedral Symmetry. The authors show the application of the designed filters for interpolation of 3D sampled data on different lattice structures. The advantages of using symmetry and zero DC constraints in filter design are presented.

The article "Satellite-HAP Network Supporting Multilayered QoS Routing in the Sky" explores the concept of an integrated satellite high altitude platform (HAP) terrestrial system for multilayered routing with guarantees of adequate quality of service. The routing algorithm is tested in simulation environment as a function of several dependent parameters, and conclusions are drawn from the study.

The article "Adaptive Modulation and Beam-forming for OFDM MIMO Systems with Rate-limited Feedback" discusses an adaptive modulation and beam-forming strategy for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing in MIMO systems with rate-limited feedback. The system model is presented and the method for utilizing the correlation between OFDM sub-carriers is explained. The author concludes that feedback requirement can be reduced by taking advantage of the correlation between sub-carriers, which also leads to improvement in terms of spectral efficiency.
